Proposed Increase for Traffic Tickets in Florida

Some residents within Okaloosa County, Florida are not pleased that they may shortly see an increase in the costs for traffic tickets. Even though the extra money generated will assist teen drivers, many are opposed.

The increase proposed would be in the amount of 5 dollars and would only affect all non criminal traffic tickets. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office would use all monies for their Teen Driver Challenge. The program, which is suffering from a tight budget this year, was created in order to improve the driving skills of Florida youth.

Last year, traffic tickets accounted for a total of $150,000 for the County. If the same amount of tickets were issued for 2011, then the total amount would be for $155,000, with $5,000 going directly to the program.

The proposal was made earlier this week and the general public will have their chance to voice their opinion on it at a public hearing later this week. The public hearing, held at the Crestview courthouse, will begin Tuesday at 6 p.m.

As stated, so far the public has had mixed reactions to the increase. According to Don Amunds, County Commissioner, “I’ve got mixed feelings. It’s a good program, but right now everybody is hurting.” Others are alright with the increase, as only those who are disobeying the law would be affected.

However, some feel this is a slippery slope and before you know it, there will be another increase to fund something else. If increases continue, many more may turn to traffic ticket lawyers to fight offense.
