OSCPA seminar helps women learn financial planning

On Friday, that is exactly what Stephanie Shanor, a certified public accountant in public practice in Oklahoma City, had all of the women attending her seminar do at the top of a budgeting sheet.

"If you know where your money is going and the goal you have for your money, that goal will keep you to that budget," she said.

Shanor was one of several women speakers who tackled sundry topics designed to help women become more financially astute. Their presentations were part of a conference called "Do It Herself: A Journey to Financial Freedom" presented by the Oklahoma Society of CPAs at the Marriott Southern Hills hotel.

"Women are typically behind the 8-ball when it comes to finances and financial planning," said Amy Welch, director of communications for the OSCPA. "Only 25 percent of women are involved in financial investing in their own household, but most of them are involved in the budgeting decisions and purchasing decisions for the whole family."

Sometimes women are so consumed with meeting the family's immediate needs that they don't necessarily think about their future needs, Welch added.

Kellie Grayson, a CPA and president of the OSCPA Tulsa chapter, commended them for attending and taking steps to reach financial independence.

"The more money you have, the more options you seem to have," she said. "However, that doesn't mean that you have to be pulling in a six-figure salary in order to be financially independent. It's a relative concept."

Among those attending was Sheryl Dunbar-Purnell, a licensed massage therapist, who has attended the conference three years in a row. She said she enjoyed it so much the first two years when she came by herself that she invited others, including her daughter, to join her this year.

"Budgeting, that is something that I am currently doing, but I need some more help," Dunbar-Purnell said.
